Ten feet of bragging

Philly’s snow is chilly,
and New York’s record popped.
Snow, snow, everywhere.
The damn stuff never stopped.

Syracuse got its ten feet.
Boston got its share.
Ten feet’s bad – we all know that.
Snow like that ain’t fair.

I’ll just stay in Texas
where winter’s short and sweet.
It may be hot here most all year,
but I don’t shovel heat.

Just before each Christmas
we pick our orange tree
and water all the flowering plants,
as pretty as can be.

And then we tune in on the news
of places cold and freezing.
Our friends who live there need our help.
We sympathize by sneezing.

Those folks up in the colder climes
all know their cold and ice.
But we know sunshine, bugs and birds,
and that our weather’s nice.

That it is Gus, I was stationed in Laredo for almost 18 months, never got cold the whole time I was there.

Hi Fiddleman - All in fun. Those folks in all of that snow did not have much fun. You and I did a whole lot better.

Chuckling, in Texas you don't shovel heat, indeed! We don't in Florida, either! One of my native born sons just moved to Maryland for a great job and I'm afraid this hub would bring him to tears, right about now...Bravo, Gus!

tnderhrt23 - I believe that your boy would cry. I spent a year driving back and forth through Maryland to go home on weekends. Sometimes nice. Sometimes ice.

Glad you enjoyed the picture.

Gus - We didn't have snow last week here in south Florida like most of the U.S. but the temperature dipped to the 30s and 40s several mornings and that's too cold for me. Guess I'll have to move further south.

Good Doctor bj - Gotta be careful now about moving south of south Florida... it's wet in the Gulf of Mexico. We had heard that you all had it kinda cold, but, then, we dipped down in temperature for several hours here, too. Have fun. Will help you find some low-cost skis if you find that you need any.

Lordy, Gus! You just crack me up!!! Sometimes nice, sometimes ice!

That is too funny! I am going up to Maryland here directly to spend some time with my son...wont have my car so wont have to drive but I am sure I will miss the Fla sunshine! One thing's for sure...I won't be shovelin no heat!!!

Nice poem, Gus, and nice weather. Good combination.

tnderhrt23 - Well, you have me a bit perplexed. Nothing could possibly be too funny, but I have had plenty of funny looks, so maybe you hit on something there. Further to things mentioned, Of course you will not have to drive your car if you won't have it. (Hah! I passed that IQ test bigtime, did I not?) As to missing the Florida sunshine and not having to shovel any heat in Maryland, you hit it right on the noggin.

Have fun visiting the kid.

chspublish - Happy I am that you enjoyed the short diatribe comparing bad weather "there" and great weather "here."

Bye the bye... I got to thinking about your hub on the blarney stone and all of that. Scratching my head a bit, I sorta recall that you had posted an image showing the stone as a sort of ground-dwelling monument. (My memory thing doesn't always work well, so maybe not...) But also as I recollect, I read somewhere that the blarney stone was high up in a castle (or the like) and that, to kiss the silly thing, a person was held upside-down from a facing window. Am I daft, or is that the situation? Living in Blarney, you would surely know. :)

Happy New Year!

Howdy Vet - I hear you ! This evening I was on a computer conference deal with lots of my old buddies from the long-closed Sampson AFB near Geneva, NY. We had a great conversation going about all of the snow and cold.

As to our oranges, our's are what are called "Satsumas." They are tangerines with a different name. We have three more orange trees getting ready to have fruit (takes lots of years in the ground before that happens). One of our daughters has a Valencia orange tree that we grew from a seed, and it is prolific. She also boasts of grapefruits, and the harvest has been great this year.

It is kinda funny, the older we get here, the better the young stuff produces. Call that a paradox in paradise, right?

Gus :-)))

p.s.: Stay warm.

Hi Vet - Were you to look about your area you would see large numbers of the evergreen trees that my crew and I planted back so many years ago. I came close to buying some rough land near Borodino (close by Lake Skaneateles)where we had planted, but at my then tender age and disposition, I did not have the 5 bucks an acre that the farmer wanted. Quite content now with the oranges and warmth.

Howdy kathryn - Great quantities of hot Jewish Penicillin (chicken soup) and tons of vitamins have been known to work wonders on lingering colds and the like. And no one is ever "too old" for anything. Check "Grandma Moses" and Gus. Might just start a whole new career tomorrow.

True words Gus (and good words). I've never been to Texas but I'm not sure I could stand that much heat. California was perfect weather when I lived there but the place is too damn pricey and populated. Now I live in the north, covered in snow five months of the year. Ah, well. Happy New Year, friend.

Howdy Doug - I hope that you have a great, fine, prosperous (never broke) 2011.

I'm freezin' in southern Florida. We had two hard freezes. We're spoiled most winters. The price is paid in blood, donated to the mosquito population, the following summers.

Spent, most of, my first twelve years on the east coast of southern Texas. I'm just not cold tolerant.

Loved the poem!

Thanks,

Kim

Howdy Kim - Good to hear from so late in the year... and here I am replying to you as we enter into 2011. I have some buddies down your way - in Northport, to be exact. They told me of the really cold weather. We had a touch of it here, but it went away in just a few hours. Today was 75! Tonight is to be just over 60. Way to go. I suppose that I should send some of that warm air along to you. OK, I will. Oh, yes. I am glad you liked the ten-foot poem.

I've only been in the very northern most regions of Texas, so I don't really know what it's like. I lived in southern Florida for a year. There were probably 3 months out of the year I didn't want to be outside, kind of like winter here where you just don't want to be out there. Anyway, I guess ideally, I would be a nomad, wintering in the lush green north in the summer where things are a little less humid, and then the south in the winter where things are more mild. Guess you had better start cleaning out a room for me ;)

Welcome to 2011, mulberry1 - Up in the north of Texas things can get mighty cold and snowy. Saw a photo of a bad blizzard near Amarillo in the old "Life" magazine back around 1957 or so. It was of a dead guy hung up on a barb wire fence 100 yards from his front door. He never could find the place. Turned out he was the brother of the sergeant who was my replacement. Yes, there can be some bad weather in many areas.

Speaking of areas - I had a newspaper route when I was a kid growing up in New York State. Along my route was a nice home with a large mulberry tree. I used to go under the hanging branches to get out of the hot sun, stand there for a while, and eat some mulberries (messy purple things!). Had to compete with all of the birds to get some.

Loved this ditty! No shoveling heat down here...that's for sure! But the AC units sure do a lot of humming in the spring, summer and fall. They get some much needed rest for a spell in the winter when the occasional heater gets to flex its muscles. There's one for you to write...the song of the air conditioning units! :-)

GusTheRedneck profile image

GusTheRedneck Hub Author 16 months ago

Peggy - There's a lot to smile about today, the first day of 2011. Your comment got me to really grin up a good one..."the song of the air conditioning units..." What a thought - "Buzz, buzz, the sound that was..."

I've been enjoying your great articles and wonderful photos, by the way. You have me looking forward to those redbud blossoms coming in just several months.

Hi Gus, just saw your reply to my comment of a few days ago, so I'm sorry to be making a reply out of order.

What you saw as part of the Blarney stone bit in the poem was a part of the Watch tower, used for the soldiers of duty and which is, (you're correct), separate from the main castle. At the time when I was uploading an image I couldn't get the main castle's very tall image on the hub, so I put in the one of the watch tower instead. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the observation. Happy New Year!

Howdy chspublish - Oh, great gobs of goose grease ! I guess that I have stepped in it once again. I was not trying to correct or embarrass you, but I really was trying to straighten out my own mind about things I thought I had seen in earlier days. When a person gets to my "maturity" it is often difficult to tell the difference between real memory and imagination. Thanks for letting me know that maybe I really had read about that stone-kissing deal way back when...

lol. Can I just say "hmph," and leave it at that? Where I'm at my shovels and my snow blower usually work double time. They are silent for the moment. But just for the moment. I'm certain what was over there on the East side will make it's way here soon.

GusTheRedneck profile image

Springboard - "hmph" works for me. I have a buddy in Traverse City, Michigan, who also has one of those snow blower things. He gave it a name - "Jaws." We hear from him every week during which the ice and snow have not snapped his phone line.

Gus it's been terrible here, went coyote hunting by the chicken coop yesterday, with one shoe and a flip flop on in my boxer shorts, It was powerful cold, HA! If I want to play in snow it's a short drive to get back home to the land of heat! 50

Howdy Fossillady - We had a few days during which the temperature dropped down to about 20 degrees F., but since then it has been 70-80 degree weather here in South Texas. Already the redbud trees are in bloom and the robins are again chasing earthworms.
