How to laugh at your own greetings

2011 - Hello HubPages Friends

Writing “hubs” and writing letters is the sort of thing we do around here, right? This “hub” combines both of those things. (Pretend that this hub is an E-Mail.)

I have many friends here through these pages, but there are so many who write and hang out on these HubPages that I could not possibly know all – but that doesn't matter. It is appropriate that I call all of you “friends.”

Say it with the comics

Greetings are good things to pass around this time of the year – particularly those that have to do with the Christmas and Hanukkah season and the coming New Year of 2012. With that in mind, Greetings!

Among the great many skills that I severely lack is the ability to draw pictures. I have found a good way to handle that deficit – I like to look at pictures others have drawn, both for my education and enjoyment. Probably the best pictures for me are those that most people call “the funnies.” Of the funnies I perhaps like the comic strip entitled “The Grizzwells” most of all. (See note below) No humans are shown in the pictures, but the critters all show traits that can only be those of people much like you and me.

Plagiarize - Let nothing evade your eyes

Shown here are three recent strips, all of which fit right into the season – and humanity. I hope that you enjoy them as much as I did when I first saw them.

(Sometimes stolen goods make for great gifts ! )

Note: “The Grizzwells” is the title of the copyrighted comic strip produced by cartoonist, Bill Schorr, and syndicated through “United Media.” The three strips shown here were downloaded from the Jewish World Review, a Web site that offers visitors a large number of news and opinion columns plus a large number of comic strips and political cartoons.

Hi Gus - I like saying things with comics. I love to draw cartoons. I have a blog that you can go to, to see my cartoons. If'n you go to my hubpages profile you will see my blog address. You can click on that link and it will take you right to em. I am a 60 year old kid that still loves comics.

Gus, What a charming, humorous, nostalgic look at the holidays thanks to the talented hands of artists and cartoonists! It's great the way an artist or cartoonist can summarize an experience or feeling in ways that help others say creatively what they think. It's a wonderful collection of timely cartoons.

Thank you for sharing, etc.,

Derdriu

Hi Peggy - Well now, I wrote a nifty reply to your welcome comment earlier this afternoon, but just as I pushed the "do-it" button here, HubPages decided to momentarily close down for "maintenance."

What I had originally written (now nicely lost to the ether) was that what you said about a little bit of humor being of importance was truly correct. In fact, one of our old professors, Dr. Sean Burke (with a mole-like thing under his left eye that made everyone always think that someone had popped him a good one...)had this to say about that sense of humor thing:

"I see that you nuns don't think my joke was funny. I'd like to assert to you that even God has a sense of humor. Aha, I see you don't believe that either, do you? Well, when you return to your barracks after classes this evening, I suggest that those of you who remain in doubt should take a good look in your mirrors..."

He taught us well - particularly me (who enjoyed his teaching).

Hi Paddyboy - I like folks who like comics. If this is your blog ( http://patscnr.blogspot.com/ ) I intend to take a look at it as soon as tonight's football game comes to an end - if indeed it does so. (That "plug," good buddy, was a freebie, by the way.

Good evening, Derdriu - It is happiness when something one puts together brings a smile to another's face. There are several comic strips that do that for me, and The Grizzwells are one of those. That JWR link is worth using if you go for such things.

Thanks for these funny strips, Gus. I sent an email to you but it was undeliverable - your mailbox is full. This is the message:

Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year to you, too, Gus. Thanks for sharing those very funny strips. The third one - the restraining order - was obscenely funny. And speaking of obscene, look at the expression on the rabbit's face. Poifect! :)

Good Doctor bj - I wish I could take credit for those "Grizzwells" comic strips. I suppose they must be my favorite ones. Starting at the top of the JWR lineup, I like Andy Capp, Frank and Ernest, The Grizzwells, Mallard Filmore, Shoe, and the Wizard of Id probably most of any I could find. JWR also has a big batch of single-pic "political" cartoons each weekday, and all are good and most are funny.

You are right on it about the retraining order deal. I sent a copy to my buddy, a lawyer, because he needs to get over all of that lawyering nonsense he has drowned in, lo these 40 or so years.

I guess my bride is going to force me to take Christmas day off, but I might need to spend most all of that day still trying to program my new cell phone. These doggoned things surely are complicated for someone as dull-witted as this old Redneck.

Hey Gus, Hope you had a great Christmas and New Year!

I have always loved cartoons in all forms, but was always told they weren't 'proper art' which I think is a load of *insert favourite noun here*

Art for me is what brings a smile to your face and I for one will never give up drawing cartoons or doodles :D

How'd the phone programming go?

Howdy Kaz - Thanks for the holiday good wishes. Christmas and New Year's Day were both to my liking - nice and quiet. Hope your's were pleasant.

I would dearly love to be able to draw cartoons. I can do the wording just fine, so I have (thus far) stuck with captioning for photo cartoons. I really envy those who can draw.

As to programming that cell phone. Oh, my word! Here we are several long days into that phone gadget and it just seems to me to be getting more and more complicated. I picked out a nice generic sort of ringtone. It sounded nice enough on testing. Then, this morning, the thing rang loudly - and it vibrated at the same time- ringing and buzzing like crazy and jumping all over the desk at the same time. Scared my left ear clean off my head and making the ear on the right wiggle up and down. Then I answered the call. I had to hold the phone 10 inches away from my head because it was so loud. My next door neighbor knocked on the door and told me to tell my caller "Thank you" for calling. After a time, things will work out OK.

Paddyboy - And I hope that you had a pleasant Christmas and New Year Holiday, too. Thanks.

I am "off" today, mostly due to having zonked my back nicely, but decided to try some new recipe nonsense through the Tylenol chomping exercising. Made some little cakes using one of my "old" recipes and then decided to get adventuresome by throwing in lots of rolled oats and a package of lemon kool aid stuff just for the fun of it. Now that the cakes are cooked, I am scared to eat one.
