Lunchtime

Right now the rain is coming down like crazy and my middle is filled up with a really fine hot sausage sandwich on a huge whole-wheat hoagie bun. Let’s deal with that very tasty lunch before going along to the source of the images that accompany this short article.

Gus! Take this thing off of me! It is still summertime and hotter than your silly sausages!Photo-Patricia E. Green

Sausage arrives and fills the empty spaces

I had sneaked past my wife and had gotten into the kitchen undetected. Our little mutt, "The Wardog" almost betrayed my presence in the kitchen, but I was able to shoo him away before our mutual boss got her suspicions aroused. That little guy always chases after me when I head for the kitchen because he knows that I am a soft touch as to tossing him a scrap of something tasty.

I pulled out the oversize skillet and popped in some marinated and well-seasoned skirt steak. The plan was to cook the steak nicely before cutting it into fajita strips. That left some room in the huge skillet, much like an invitation not to be wasted. In the refrigerator was a half package of "Eckridge" brand smoked sausages loaded with lots of chopped jalapeno pepper. There, dear friends, is a combination that is hard to beat. After the sausages were sliced right down their middles, into the skillet they went.

Hotdogs - plus more - when you have room on the grill, you should never waste it. Photo -ronnieb

They say that you would never eat a hotdog if you watched them being made

I next cut a foot-long whole-wheat hoagie into two pieces and sliced each half down its middle. It was a beautiful bunch of bread, even before anything was placed on it. All of the pieces were then treated to a good slopping with mayonnaise and each of the half pieces smiled their thanks after being gifted with several handfuls of lettuce pieces. In the meantime the sausage finished cooking. Once the meat was added on, the sandwiches were closed and ready for lunch – one sandwich for me and one for the boss (and none for Wardog). Oh my word! The lunch was so very good that it disappeared before I could whip out my little camera and record the sandwiches in photos to place with this article. (Hunger causes such lapses.)

None of that is to say that regular hotdogs would have not done the trick. It would have been easy enough to put some jalapeno slices in with the lettuce leaves and mayo. Indeed, you can do lots of nifty things with regular hot dogs. Witness this photo of an artfully grilled hotdog that is destined to become the heart and soul of a hotdog sandwich with some super sauerkraut on rye bread. Can’t you just taste that one right now?

Makes you hungry just to look at this picture, doesn't it? Photo - kconnors

A "morgue" where there is a lot of life

Now, all about that photo source. It is "morguefile" on the Internet as a repository of royalty-free photos from a large number of photographers. Access is free to all, and there is no charge under most circumstances for the use of the photos. Most uses do not require attribution of the photo source or of the photographers, but it is always a nice thing for users to provide those whenever they can.

All of the photos with this article came from "morguefile." You can easily see that the photo qualities are good. It is easy to find the sort of image you want, too. For this article I typed the word, "hotdog" into the search box and came up with a big selection of images from which to choose. Evidently, there must be thousands and thousands of photos available on this site for downloading. No matter what I typed into the search box, something always came back on the screen.

Have fun with your image downloading. I am very pleased that I had a great lunch today and that all of those photographers made my article preparation almost as much fun as eating that beautiful jalapeno peppered sausage sandwich.

Hi, Gus, I knew I should have waited until after dinner to read your hub. Now i'm starving and no sausage or peppers in sight. Have to rely on a salad with chicken, but it just won't be the same.

Thanks for the photos tip - always searching for new creative sources.

Hi Good Doctor bj - I apologize for tormenting you, but chicken is great stuff, particularly with salad. We are still working on some BBQ'd chicken and smoked baked potatoes from this past weekend. As to the photos, I really do appreciate "morguefile" as a photo source to be joined up with my own huge files on CD. If I can save myself the effort of shooting my own photos, that is all the happier I can get.

Friend Lela of the great but "different" land of Austin, Texas - share and share alike. Like that hot sausage, the MorgueFile was a nice find. Morgues are meant for sharing.

That poor dog - that is cruelty to animals - or humiliation. If I tried that on my mals....oh wait - I put hats and antlers on them at Christmas so I guess I'm right in there as well.

I just don't think about the hot dogs - they are too dang good to worry about it! It's not like I eat 50 of them per day but every once in a while...yummy - now I'm craving one. What have you done man?

The morguefile is a great source. I have a bunch on my hubs but I have to go back through the attribute them to there just because I feel I should - I'll eventually get the links all squared away!

Cute pup - won't show my dogs - they may run the other way worrying I'll do something similar!

Hello Audrey - Antlers! Shame, shame, shame. Anyway, that little dog would certainly have contorted and licked off all of that mustard were it real mustard. Your comments were funny and made me laugh. Thanks.

Howdy Christoph - Well, likely it is that a thumb on the grill is more indicative of honest intent that is a thumb on the scale when those hotdogs were purchased. AND, thinking of hotdogs brings the image of that ubiquitous gadget called "Bain Marie" to mind - the hotdog steamer with the metal rollers named after Moses' sister (who was an alchemist who used hot water baths in her attempts to turn base metals into gold...) History and myth revisted!

Howdy bayoulady - The smoked sausages loaded with chopped jalapeno pepper will beat hotdogs any day... but hotdogs are surely good eating, too. MorgueFile is a good one for images. It was new to me, but others here on Hubpages knew about it and like it.
